When to Consider a Gum Lift — and When Not to
If it frustrates you how much of your gums show when you smile, a gum lift might be the perfect treatment option. However, you have to meet certain qualifications to be a candidate for the procedure.
Based on our team’s experience at Smile Design Manhattan in New York City, here are a few tips on when you should consider a gum lift — and when you shouldn’t.
What’s a gum lift?
A gum lift is a cosmetic dental procedure that can improve the appearance of your smile by removing excess gum tissue above your teeth. Also known as gum contouring or a gingivectomy, the procedure can also reshape your gum line to be more symmetrical.
We can usually complete a gum lift in a single office visit. Your dentist uses a dental pen to draw your new projected gum line, then administers a local anesthetic and uses a laser to gently trim the excess gum tissue.
You won’t need stitches because the laser effectively cauterizes the gum tissue as it cuts, sealing off blood vessels and minimizing bleeding.
You can expect swollen gums for a few days after the procedure, but discomfort should be minimal; you can resume eating and drinking the next day. Full healing takes about a week.
Who should get one?
Good candidates for a gum lift include those with too much gum tissue covering their teeth.
That can happen for several reasons, including gums that didn’t properly recede after your permanent teeth came in, gum disease causing uneven gum recession, or even genetics causing too much gum growth.
Excess gum tissue can bring aesthetic and oral health concerns. A gum lift may be ideal if you:
- Want a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing smile
- Need a crown or filling but lack sufficient tooth structure
- Seek a hygiene boost; excess gum tissue can lead to bacterial growth and gum disease
If you’re considering a smile makeover, we can perform a gum lift along with veneers, orthodontics, or other treatments to give you a great smile.
Who shouldn’t get one?
Some people aren’t good candidates for a gum lift. You fall in this category if you have:
- Active gum disease; infected or diseased gums must be treated first
- Gums that are already receding
- Certain health conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or an autoimmune disease
- Poor oral hygiene, which can lead to post-procedure infection
