Single Implants vs. All-on-4: Which Is Right for Me?
If you’re missing teeth, you’ve likely heard that implants are the gold standard for replacing them.
But then you hear about single implants, multiple implants, and even something called All-on-4, and you’re not sure which direction to go.
At Smile Design Manhattan in New York City, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re missing a single tooth or need a complete set, we can take care of you. Here’s how to know whether single implants or All-on-4 is right for you.
What are single implants?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that we install in your jawbone to serve as a replacement root for a prosthetic tooth. After a few weeks for the implant to fuse with your jawbone, we attach a connector to the implant, and top that with a crown that mimics your natural tooth.
This implant not only restores your smile but also stimulates your jawbone to keep it healthy and prevents the adjacent teeth from shifting.
Dental implants are permanent, so you don’t have to worry about them falling out or having to replace them.
What’s All-on-4?
If you’re missing all (or almost all) of your upper and/or lower teeth, getting an implant for every missing tooth would seem daunting. That’s where All-on-4 comes in. All-on-4 is an entire upper or lower arch of teeth that we can install with just four implants for the whole arch.
After we place four implants in your jawbone, we have you wear a set of temporary teeth while the implants bond with the bone. Then, you return to the office for the placement of your permanent teeth.
With All-on-4, your teeth are uniform. As with single implants, teeth falling out won’t be an issue. And, with proper care and follow-up, they should last the rest of your life.
How to decide?
If you only need to replace one or a couple of teeth, single implants are your best option. If you’re missing most or all of your teeth, All-on-4 is generally easier than installing 8-10 implants.
Other factors to consider: Single implants require a significant amount of bone, so a bone graft is sometimes necessary before the procedure. We install All-on-4 implants at an angle to take full advantage of the bone you have, so the need for a bone graft is less likely.
All-on-4 is usually more cost-effective than an equivalent amount of individual implants, and the process is faster as well, since you go home with temporary teeth the same day.
